The Marubi Museum and Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia are delighted to present the exhibition “Felice Beato and Adolfo Farsari: Two Italians in the Far East.” Curated by Fondazione Alinari per la Fotografia with the scientific consultancy of Rossella Menegazzo, this exhibition marks a significant collaboration between the two esteemed institutions.
Felice Beato and Adolfo Farsari stand as pivotal figures in the history of Italian and global photography. Their pioneering spirit led them to capture the essence of the Far East, particularly Japan, during a transformative period in the late 19th century. Through their lens, they offered the Western world a glimpse into the rich culture, landscapes, and traditions of these distant lands.
Their works not only documented the visual splendors of the Far East but also played a crucial role in popularizing the cultural phenomenon known as Japonisme in Europe. Japonisme refers to the influence of Japanese art, aesthetics, and culture on Western artists and thinkers, and Beato and Farsari’s photographs played a vital role in introducing this trend to a broader audience.
The exhibition features a curated selection of photographs, showcasing the mastery, innovation, and artistic vision of these two remarkable photographers. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a visual journey through time and space, experiencing the allure of the Far East as captured through the eyes of Beato and Farsari.
We are grateful for the support of the Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation of Albania and the Italian Culture Institute in Tirana in making this exhibition possible.
Join us for the opening of this extraordinary exhibition, celebrating the enduring legacy of Felice Beato and Adolfo Farsari and their contributions to the world of photography and cultural exchange.
