Shkodra is situated in a picturesque region that boasts a unique natural setting, characterized by lakes, rivers, and mountains.

Nestled amidst picturesque mountains and adorned with the shimmering waters of Lake Shkodra, the breathtaking natural beauty of Shkodra is a symphony of vibrant flora, cascading waterfalls, and a tranquil oasis that captivates the senses.

To the west of Shkodra lies Lake Shkodra, also known as Lake Skadar or Lake Scutari. It is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula and is shared by both Albania and Montenegro. The lake is renowned for its stunning beauty and rich biodiversity. Its vast expanse covers an area of approximately 370 square kilometers, with a length of about 44 kilometers and a width of 14 kilometers. The lake is fed by several rivers, including the Drin River, which originates from Lake Prespa in the southeast.

The Drin River flows through the city of Shkodra, dividing it into two parts. It is one of the longest rivers in Albania, stretching over 335 kilometers from its source in Lake Ohrid, which is located at the border between Albania and North Macedonia, to the Adriatic Sea. The Drin River plays a significant role in the region’s hydrological system and provides a vital source of water for irrigation and various human activities.

On the eastern side of Shkodra, you will find the stunning Albanian Alps, also known as the Accursed Mountains or Bjeshkët e Namuna. These majestic mountain ranges create a magnificent backdrop for the city. The Albanian Alps are part of the Dinaric Alps and offer breathtaking landscapes, rugged peaks, deep gorges, and pristine wilderness. The highest peak in this range is Jezerca, standing at an elevation of 2,694 meters.

The combination of the vast Lake Shkodra, the flowing waters of the Drin River, and the majestic Albanian Alps surrounding the city of Shkodra creates a truly remarkable natural environment. It provides residents and visitors with opportunities for various outdoor activities, such as boating, fishing, hiking, and exploring the stunning landscapes. The unique blend of lake, rivers, and mountains contributes to the city’s charm and makes it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike.
