Peaks of the Balkans Trail

The Peaks of the Balkans trail is an ambitious and breathtaking 192km journey that traverses the stunning landscapes of three countries: Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo. This circuit can be started from Theth in Albania, Plav in Montenegro, or the small town of Peja in Kosovo. Typically completed in 10 to 12 days, the trail is divided into 10 stages, offering hikers a challenging yet rewarding experience.

Trail Difficulty and Requirements

The difficulty level of the trail ranges from easy to moderate, making it accessible to hikers with a good physical condition and the right mountain equipment. Essential gear includes hiking boots, waterproof clothing, a lamp, GPS, a first aid kit, and a mobile phone. While the entire trail is marked and signposted, it does venture into remote and uninhabited mountain regions, so preparation and caution are key.

Cross-Border Procedures

In 2011, Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo agreed on common cross-border procedures to facilitate hiker movements across the borders in the mountains. Hikers must apply for approval at least 15 days in advance from the respective police institutions in the country they are leaving. Here is the cross border procedure in Albania.

The Dinaric Alps Region

The trail winds through the mesmerizing Dinaric Alps, also known as the “Accursed Mountains,” which stretch across northern Albania, southwestern Kosovo, and eastern Montenegro. This region is one of the least known and most pristine areas in Southeast Europe, offering hikers a unique opportunity to explore untouched natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage.

Authentic Experience and Hospitality

The Dinaric Alps region is known for the warm hospitality of its inhabitants. Along the trail, visitors can stay in traditional stone houses, called “Kullas,” mountain huts, and small lodges, where local hosts provide cozy accommodations and delicious home-cooked meals. This authentic experience allows hikers to immerse themselves in the local culture and enjoy the genuine kindness of the people who call this rugged region home.

A Journey Through Nature and Tradition

The Peaks of the Balkans trail offers an unparalleled adventure through some of the most beautiful and untouched landscapes in Europe. Hikers will experience the serene beauty of the mountains, the rich cultural traditions of the local communities, and the sense of accomplishment that comes from completing this epic journey. Whether you start in Albania, Montenegro, or Kosovo, the Peaks of the Balkans trail promises an unforgettable and transformative experience.
